| The philosophy behind our studio design and
operation:
Watersign's studio was created to go against the
grain of experience I've had of many studios and engineers, where
the studio can be intimidating and the engineer already knows everything.
We designed and furnished the place to be inspirational and supportive
of a high level of creativity. It is also our belief that the customer
deserves our best work, and that includes supporting ideas that
we don't always 'get' at first, because the artist often has insight
that can only be imparted through actual creation.
The studio was built "inside out" due
to space restrictions. We couldn't have a big "live" room
so we made the drum room as big as possible. We picked a great sounding
Pearl Session Custom kit for the variety of styles it can support.
The cymbals were hand-picked to my taste but I'm happy to have players
swap in their own cymbals and snare if desired. Having the drums
in their own environment opens editing possibilities. Having them
set up and mic'd just makes sense.
The main room is a combination control/screening/jam
room where we often set up acoustic instruments or electric guitars
and basses, and the effect is good line-of-sight with good separation.
The vocal booth can be used in a traditional way
but it is also big enough for acoustic instruments or loud amps.
The large screen was installed to give a feeling
of inclusion to all at the session and so that edits and adjustments
could be explained and demonstrated clearly. This is especially
helpful when editing voice over
recordings or individual instrument parts.
We picked Pro Tools (TDM and later) HD Accel 2
as our multi-track system because we have found it to be robust
and versatile, with third party accessories (plug-ins) of excellent
quality. We have done sessions on other platforms though, with the
artist or producer bringing their own laptop and monitoring through
our screens and speakers.
